Flowers blooming in Yanggu


In a village with lofty mountains and turbulent rivers,
The flowers bloom as red as blood;
Every season birds cry on the mountain-side.
From the beginning of June to the end of December
In the year of nineteen fifty-one,
On the Mts. Dosol, Deawoo, Baeksok and Gachilbong,
At the Bloody Ridge and the Heartbreak Ridge,
At the Punch Bowl or on the nameless hills,
Some 28,300 soldiers were dead or missing:
Shoutings, outcries of the brutal battlefield,
Overflowing rivers of blood,
Buried in the wind and earth,
Now push up vigorously the stalks of flowers.
"Mother! Mother!" in the hell of cannonade
"My Heart Breaks, Heart Breaks!"
Urgent outbursts have become a legend;
Friendly or enemy forces and blue-eyed soldiers
Coming across the ocean under the UN flag,
All in Heaven but tell the intensity of the day
By the message of rain, wind or heavy snowfalls.
The Land of Guardians:
A leaf of grass, a flower, don't look at them as usual
And please don't forget:
Freedom today is stained with blood,
Tears of sublime sacrifice underneath the smiling
Peace.
When you pass by Yanggu, the land of myth,
Stop at the sight of flowers as red as blood,
Regard them as souls bloomed,
And please take your hats off brooding a while
Slowing down your busy pace.
